Meet the faces behind Legacy

Legacy_Elizabeth

Elizabeth Cowell

By running in this year’s Brisbane Marathon Festival, you are supporting Legacy and incredible people like Elizabeth.  Elizabeth is truly a strong inspiration, having lost both her dad and her partner to military service, and she has been a part of Legacy for over 40 years. “I lost both my father and my husband to military service, and Legacy was there for both my mother and my family. I can’t thank Legacy enough for their caring support to me and my family for over the past 40 years.” On behalf of all Legacy widows and families, thank you and good luck on Sunday 6 August.

William Beckwith

Imagine losing your father at just four years old. This was the reality of William and his family, whose father passed away from a service related illness after serving in the Navy. William says that he remembers the first Christmas without his Dad, and being comforted when he saw presents under the tree from Legacy. Since then, William has attended Legacy Youth development camps where he has met many friends who have all lost a parent to military service. “I get to go on Legacy Youth Camps with other kids just like me, and I know that we will be mates for life. Part of what makes those camps so special is that I feel like I can be myself, and not the boy who lost his Dad.”

Kathy Underdown

Legacy_KathyLegacy Brisbane cares for the families of those who have served our country, including those dependants who are living with a disability. Legacy provides social and financial support to help them thrive despite having lost a parent. One such person is Kathy, whose father served in the Middle East and New Guinea during WW2. Legacy cares from Kathy and her mum, with Kathy being an active participant in the social outings provided by Legacy. The most recent outing was at Couran Cove. “I feel like I am at home at Legacy. I have made lifelong friends here.”

Whether you are running Brisbane Marathon Festival on 6th August for fitness or personal reward, or even if you are supporting the event by way of volunteering, we thank you for supporting Legacy Brisbane and we wish you the best of luck on race day.
